Course objectives
The aim of the two-semester subject is to introduce the system of morphological means of contemporary Ukrainian and to develop students abilities to compare the system with the Czech morphological system. The main aim of the lessons is to apply the gained knowledge in practical communication. Learning the basic types of derivation in Ukrainian and meeting national particularities in the given area, with semantics and form connected to the word classes, with the system of word classes in functional aspect.
Syllabus
  • Nouns. Lexical-grammatical categories: proper and common nouns, concrete and abstract names, collective and collective nouns. Singularia tantum, pluralia tantum. Grammatical categories: gender, number, case, animateness.
  • Declension – principles of paradigm classification: first, second, third and fourth declension. Declension of pluralia tantum nouns. Indeclinable nouns. Proper names.
  • Adjectives. Semantic types. Paradigms of quality and relation adjectives. Nominal forms. Meaning of nominal forms of some quality adjectives. Comparing: comparative and superlative forms, role of comparative and superlative in a sentence. Comparative forms in other meaning than comparison. Substantivization of adjectives.
  • Pronouns – their usage in the language. Types of pronouns: personal, reflexive, possessive, demonstrative, determiners, interrogative, relative, indefinite, negative.
  • Numerals: cardinal, ordinal, collective, indefinite, fractions. Categories of gender, number and case. Connecting cardinal numerals with nouns and adjectives. Expressing portions. Expressing approximation. Accent of numerals. Spelling of numerals, relation with nouns and adjectives
  • Verbs. Personal and impersonal forms. Predicate categories. Personal and impersonal verbs, transitive and intransitive verbs. Infinitive. Verb stem – infitive, present, past. Alternation of final consonants in a stem.
  • Morphological categories of verbs: aspect (formation of aspect pairs, verbs with only one aspect, verbs with both aspects, aspect pairs formed from different word roots), voice (active, passive), mood (indicative, imperative, conditional), tense (present, past, future), person, number, gender.
  • Verbal adjectives. Predicate forms with –no, -to endings. Participles.
  • Adverbs: their morphological and semantic feature. Classification of adverbs: quality, conditional, pronominal. Predicate adverbs.
  • Prepositions: proper and improper. Meaning of prepositional constructions.
  • Conjunctions: proper (primary), improper (secondary); simple, compound; single, repetitive, segmented, not segmented; coordinating, subordinating. Types of coordinating and subordinating conjuctions.
  • Particles: reinforcing, limiting, specifying, determining, interrogative, exclamatory, confirming, negative, parenthesis, modal, comparing, emotional, morphological. Their meaning and function.
  • Interjections as a word class. Their classification according to the origin, meaning and morphology.

Teaching methods
The course has a form of lectures and follow-up seminars. Student who register for the subject are obliged to properly attend the lessons. There is a written and oral examination at the end of the subject.
