Course objectives
The topic of this series of lectures is Czech literary Classicism. Although it did not influence 19th-century Czech literature to the extent to which Romanticism, Realism, or Parnassianism did, it left considerable mark on the age notwithstanding. Coming from contemporary research in the field, we shall attempt to outline its main features in Czech literature, as well as its influence in music and visual arts, all of this in a wider European context. The series shall include interpretations of individual works by famous and less famous authors of the age (for instance, Antonín Jaroslav Puchmajer, Ján Kollár, Karel Alois Vinařický, Jaroslav Vrchlický, Svatopluk Čech), putting these in wider cultural contexts. Some of the lectures shall be given by guest lecturers, who shall be prominent experts on a given topic. The lectures are available for everyone interested in 19th-century Czech literature and culture.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course, the student shall be able:
– to describe classicist elements in Czech literature;
– to understand Czech liteary Classicism and its specifics in European context;
– to identify classicist elements in a literary work;
– to interpret literary works influenced by Classicism.
