Course objectives
The course prepares students for writing their final thesis. The diploma thesis addresses a scholarly issue at a level appropriate to the degree being pursued. In the diploma thesis the student must demonstrate the ability to work independently in keeping with academic standards, a knowledge and understanding of the relevant scholarly literature and the ability to analyze the issue under study. The course may take the form of formally-organized contact hours or individual consultations with the thesis supervisor, depending on the specific demands of the degree program and thesis´ topic. Students are required to present a work-in-progress of their diploma thesis in the framework of the MA Thesis Seminar of the Department of Classical Studies.
Learning outcomes
The student is able to:
- to propose and describe the thesis table of contents;
- to search and compare the relevant primary and secondary sources;
- to analyze the issue under study;
- to write the chapters of the thesis;
- to resume and comment the pieces of knowledge;
- to apply the metodology of writing the diploma thesis: synopsis, introduction, methods of text analysis, argumentation and conclusion.

  • The goal of the diploma seminar is to assist the student in completing the diploma thesis and prepare for its successful defence. This timetable for the consultations is arranged on an individual basis.

Teaching methods
Individual student-advisor tutorial, during which student presents and discusses the used scholarly literature and particular methodologic aproach to the solved topic. Later presenting and analysing particular chapters: methods of text-analysis, argumentation, proper conclusions-formulation.
Assessment methods
The advisor awards the course-unit credit for the semester on the basis of examination of particular parts of diploma-thesis and students ability to work out the advisors comments on it.
