Course objectives
Integral concept of a disease. Relation between physical symptoms and psychic state. Psychosocial approach. The importance of relationship between physician and patient. Forms of communication. Variables modifying physician-patient relationship on conscious and unconscious level. Role of patient, experiencing disease, attitude to disease, meaning of the symptom. Role of therapist, adaptive and maladaptive realization and attitudes. Principles of intervention during acute psychic crisis. Psychological problems of each developmental period. Role of psychologist in medical team, psychodiagnostic methods. Psychological specificity of medical care in individual branches, care of long-term patients and dying patient, work with pain, anxiety. Relationships and forms of communication in a team of therapists.
Learning outcomes
Student understands why psychology is important in medicine and distinguishes different approaches to disease and health (bio-medical, bio-psycho-social, holistic, self-regulating, allostatic) Student understands definitions of health and is able to understand health in different contexts as a multi-level phenomenon Student understands the relationship between emotion, motivation and health Student understands the interaction approach to stress and the relationship of stress, health and illness Student will know theoretical bases of various psychological therapies used in medical context. Student will understand the use of psychotherapeutic technic in clinical practice Student will understand the influence of psychic factors on the functioning of various somatic systems Student will become acquainted with the psychosomatic paradigm in medicine, will understand the concept of human being as psychophysiological unity, will get acquainted with basic nosological concepts of psychosomatic medicine and will be familiar with the basic explanatory models describing the relationship between psychosocial variables and disease.

  • Holistic approach towards illness.
    Relationship between symptom and psychic status.
    Psychosomatic aspects in psychooncology, gynecology and obstetrics, algesiology, orhtopedy, internal medicine…Doctor patient relationship.
    Communication styles.
    Position of patient, illness perception and the meaning of symptoms.
    Acute mental crisis intervention.
    Role of psychologist in multidisciplinary medical teams.
    Psychological approaches in different medical fields.
    Long term ill and dying patients.
    Pain and anxiety.
    Relationship and communication in medical teams.
