- Course objectives
- In the course the students will analyse several productions of Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelung. The students will acquire the information about history of staging practice of the work, about the works on which the Ring is based; and also Wagner’s theoretical thinking about theatre, and his ideas applied in staging practice. The student should be able to explain Wagner’s concept of music drama, the artwork of the future and the principle of Gesamtkunstwerk. The teacher and students will analyse both the historical productions of the Ring, and contemporary productions performed after 2000.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to: understand and explain the principles of Gesamtkunstwerk; work with information on the stagings of the Ring of the Nibelung; explain the differences between opera and music drama; analyse and compare different productions of The Ring of the Nibelung - also in the context of the history of staging practice of the work; interpret the topic from the point of view of theatre theory.
