Course objectives
The course is designed as a lecture introducing key terms of contemporary literary criticism and leading trends of both Czech as well as world literary theory. The main resource for study is a volume of primary texts, which will be also used as a reference material during lectures.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course the students will be able:
- to grasp contemporary currents in literary theory;
- to grasp contemporary problems in literary theory;
- to analyse and interpret selected literary theoretical texts;
- to apply this theoretical knowledge to analysing particular literary texts.

  • 1. Interpretation: general problems of understanding and analysis of a literary work.
  • 2. Semantic approaches to text, the structure of meaning in a literary work.
  • 3. Pragmatic approaches to text, theory of reception.
  • 4. Impulses of Czech literary structuralism.
  • 5. Impulses of postclassical narratology.
  • 6. Narrative construction of reality and identity.
  • 7. Theory of autobiography and autofiction.
  • 8. Methodology of literary history I: a synoptical-pulsating model.
  • 9. Methodology of literary history II: impulses of new historicism.
  • 10. Theory of fictional worlds.
  • 11. Theory of Intermediality.
  • 12. Post-colonialism and Deconstruction.
  • 13. Interpretation from Cognitology and Theory of Thought aspects.

Lecture is based on methods of presentation, analysis and synthesis of knowledge.
Assessment methods
The course ends with an oral exam during which the students must prove their knowledge of the texts provided in ELF.
