Course objectives
Students will learn basic literary disciplines and Dutch literary-terminology. They will learn about the most important literary streams in the development of Dutch literature and the basic methodological approaches of literary science. Emphasis is placed on practical analysis of epic and lyrical texts, ie narratology and versology. At the end of the course, he will try to analyze the drama and reflection of the literature. The course is taught by a block-visiting professor.

Syllabus
  • Every lecture brings into focus one specific topic: 1. Two views on poetics: traditional and experimental poetics (the fifties)
  • 2. Assimilation and shifts in Flemish (and Dutch) poetry
  • 3. “Neorealism” in the fifties and sixties (the Netherlands and Flanders)
  • 4. A response to “Neorealism”: neoromanticism and mannerism (in the Netherlands and Flanders)
  • 5. Postmodernism and beyond postmodernism: the heritage of a “manneristic” and “autonomous” poetics.
