- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is:
- to acquire a deep knowledge of the "language question" in the 19th and 20th cent. Greece, first of all of the language form called "Katharevousa";
- to understand the causes of diglossia in Greece in historical context;
- to acquire a good practical knowledge of Katharevousa while reading and analysing the period texts (Korais, Kodrikas, Kommitas, Gregorius V., Roidis, Papadiamantis, etc.). - Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students will understand the Greek "language question" and the term "Katharevousa". They will be able to describe functional differentiation of Greek language and the emergence of diglossia in Greece. They will be familiar with grammar of Katharevousa and they will use this skill in reading and translating of period texts.
- Syllabus
- 1.-3. Emergence and development of Greek diglossia from Antiquity up to the present.
- 4.-9. Emergence and development of the Greek "language question" (glossiko zitima).
- 10.-11. Grammar system of Katharevousa.
- 12.-13. Language analysis of chosen texts.

- Teaching methods
- Planned learning activities and teaching methods consist of lectures, reading and analysis of Greek texts written in Katharevousa.
- Assessment methods
- The course ends with an oral exam (duration: 30 min). In order to be awarded credits, students have to demonstrate the knowledge of the history and grammar of Katharevousa and the ability of correct interpretation and translation of a selected part of the Greek text.
