The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
In the frame of this subject the students get to know the world of medieval monastery, which was created by its internal rules also as by the contacts with other monastic institutions. We will study specific Cistercian architecture first born in Romanesque Burgundy which absorbed certain early Gothic elements when spreading out through the whole Europe. The male and female Cistercians entered Moravia in the first half of the 13. Century and founded many monasteries there, that had influenced building culture of the central Europe afterwards. The wide spread of the Cistercians was influenced by the very close relations between different monasteries but also by family relationships among reigning and nobility dynasties. The Convent Porta Coeli illustrates the above described process, esp. in the times of its foundation, anyway we will study its further life during the next centuries too.
Learning outcomes
To describe the beginnings and spread of the Cistercian architecture in Europe, distinguish the transformation of the Romanesque architecture into the Gothic one, identify the founding activities of the Premyslid dynasty and its related families, discern the main spheres of building activities in Moravia in the 13. Century, outline the basic procedure of establishing and further building of the medieval monastry, to identify the destructive and aslo renovating tendentions in the future life of conventual buildings.

Teaching methods
The course is taught in the form of lectures, special scholarly excursion will allow practical view on current state of the Convent Porta coeli.
