- Course objectives
- The history of Polish literature and the Polish language are closely intertwined with the history of the Polish nation and state in modern era. Without basic knowledge of Polish historical development - especially from the third division of the Polish-Lithuanian Union in the late 18th century to the present days.
- Learning outcomes
- Student will be able:
- to identify and summarize the main problems of the history of Poland in the context of Central Europe in the selected period;
- to compare the historical development in Poland in the selected period with the development in the Czech lands;
- to identify and comment the subject's primary literature;
- to analyze the main sources and work with them;
- to write an essay on the subject and discuss the topic. - Syllabus
- 1. Three partitions of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1772-1795) – causes and effects;
- 2. Polish question during the Napoleonic Wars;
- 3. „For our freedom and yours“;
- 4. Between treason, loyalty and patriotism;
- 5. World War I and recreated Poland;
- 6. Interwar Poland – successes and failures;
- 7. World War II – „defeat in victory“;
- 8. Part of the Soviet bloc (1945, 1956, 1968, 1970, 1980, 1981, 1989);
- 9. The prize of freedom (road to NATO and the EU);
- 10. Contemporary Poland – liberal, conservative or post-communist?
