Course objectives
The course is dealing with the grasp of wide context and atmosphere at the end of the 19th century and at the begining of the 20th century. It focuses mainly on philosophical background and changes in the perception of the world.

The course is held in Czech.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student will be able to:
- characterize the European modern and avant-garde art period (1. theatre reform);
- include the work of theatre modernist and avant-garde artists into historical context;
- interpretate changes of European civilization at the turn of the 19th and 20th century (modern science, industrialization of the society, change of the relationship to the body) and to relate to the other kinds of art.

  • Utopian vision and the position of the art in the new society
  • Period of modernist experiments (till 1918)
  • Turn to pragmatism of the avant-garde (after 1918)
