Course objectives
The course will analyse, in a frontal and laboratory setting, certain areas of the Italian language system from the theoretical perspective of linguistic typology. This implies a systematic comparison with the systems of other languages (including the students' native languages).
Learning outcomes
The student will explore theoretical and practical aspects of linguistic typology and appropriately use its categories of analysis to interpret observed linguistic phenomena. Through this work, he/she will develop a sensitivity towards the relativity vs. universality of certain language facts while strengthening his/her metalinguistic skills.
Syllabus
  • The course will be developed around the following topics: - The notion of linguistic type. - Linguistic universals. - Implicational hierarchies. - Semantic maps. - Morphological typology. - Syntactic typology.
