- Course objectives
- The course will analyse certain areas of the Italian language system from the theoretical perspective of linguistic typology. This implies a systematic comparison with the systems of other languages (including the students' native languages).
- Learning outcomes
- The student will explore theoretical and practical aspects of linguistic typology and appropriately use its categories of analysis to interpret observed linguistic phenomena. Through this work, he/she will develop a sensitivity towards the relativity vs. universality of certain language facts while strengthening his/her metalinguistic skills.

- The course will be developed around the following topics: - The notion of linguistic type. - Linguistic universals. - Implicational hierarchies. - Semantic maps. - Morphological typology. - Syntactic typology.
