Course objectives
The goal of the course is to introduce students to important texts in applied ethics.
Learning outcomes
The successful student will be able to read and interpret English texts in applied ethics and explain the key concepts.
Syllabus
  • The reading materials may include:
  • Aquinas on suicide
  • Kant on suicide
  • Rachels - More Impertinent Distinctions and a Defense of Active Euthanasia
  • Marquis - An Argument that Abortion is Wrong
  • Mill - A Speech in Favour of Capital Punishment
  • Bedau - The Case Against the Death Penalty
  • Regan - The Case for Animal Rights
  • Machan - Do Animals Have Rights?
  • Leopold - The Land Ethic
  • Fieser - An Argument Against Normative Ecocentrism
  • It is possible that some other relevant readings may be used instead of the above, if plausible.

Assessment methods
Written test, open questions , min. 60 percent to pass. Attendance max. 2 unexcused absences. Combined students three in-term quizzes, min. 60 percent in total to pass. Passing these is a condition for taking the final test.
