Course objectives
The course focuses on the impact of modern technology on human behaviour and experience. Specifically, it will introduce the topics most frequently discussed in the literature in relation to the phenomenon of video game playing. Emphasis is also placed on the methodological aspects of the research conducted; therefore, completion of Methodology I is a prerequisite for enrolling in this course.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be be oriented in the subject matter. Students should be able to critically evaluate the contribution of key studies to the advancement of knowledge, particularly with regard to their methodological quality.
Syllabus
  • The main topics discussed will be the negative consequences of playing video games as well as their positive potential. In addition, the social context of video gaming, especially the family environment, will be addressed. Methodological aspects of key studies in the experimental investigation of violent video game playing as well as the integration of findings into the form of meta-analytic studies will also be discussed. Other topics discussed will include the psychological background of video game creation in the context of different game genres, issues of motivation to play video games, e-sports, and other current information.
