Course objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to: - understand and use the instruments and methods of the discipline; - have a general view of dialects in Italy; - describe their phonological, morphosyntaxical and lexical features.
Learning outcomes
Students will learn to identify the features of the several dialectal varieties and to use the tools of the discipline.
Syllabus
  • Course topics: What is a dialect (between linguistics and sociolinguistics). From Latin to Italoromance varieties and from these to 'dialects'. Dialectology: history, methods and tools. Classifications of Italian dialects. Phonological, morphosyntactic and lexical characteristics of the main dialects. Grammaticalisation phenomena in different dialects.

Teaching methods
Lectures on course topics. Advanced seminars. Workshop activities (analysis of texts, individual or group presentations based on self-study materials).
Assessment methods
The assessment of learning is divided into two segments: (A) Written essay on an agreed topic (based on self-study materials; cf. "Study materials"). Segment (A) is used to assess autonomy in learning management (knowing how to use theoretical notions, solve case studies, etc.). It will be possible to replace this testing segment with attendance of ROM2B105 Research Seminar - Guest Lecturers Series (A) and submission of related assignments. (B) Written test on course content (open questions and exercises on dialect texts). Attendance of at least 80% of the lessons is required (three absences maximum).
