Course objectives
In this course the historical development of Dutch from an "external" point of view is examined. The different stages of Dutch are discussed. Special attention is given to the process of standardization of Dutch. We also discuss the geographical, social and situational variation within Dutch.

Teaching methods
A combination of lecture and seminar (two hours per week); within the class a combination of teacher-led activities and student-centered learning activities (discussions about chapters of books and articles).
