Mineralogy and natural sciences.
Principles of morphological crystallography. Crystal classes.
Principles of crystal structure. Basic conceptions of structural crystallography.
Physical properties of minerals.
Optical properties of minerals.
Origin of minerals; minerals of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
Descriptive mineralogy. The classification and characterization of some major rock-forming minerals.

Petrology and significance and methods of the petrological research. Rocks and minerals. Properties of rocks.
Origin and mineral composition of igneous rocks. Textures and structures of igneous rocks. Classification of igneous rocks.
Origin of the sedimentary rocks. Mineral composition, textures and structures of sedimentary rocks. Classification and characterization of some sedimentary rocks.
Metamorphism and metamorphic rocks. Contact and regional metamorphism. Mineralogical composition of metamorphic rocks. Characterization of the fabric of metamorphic rocks. Products of the contact and regional metamorphism.
Syllabus
  • Mineralogy, mineralogy in natural sciences. Crystals and minerals. Origin and growth of crystals.
  • Basic crystallographic conceptions. Crystal symmetry. Symmetry operations and elements (symmetry plane, symmetry axis, symmetry center). Symmetry notation. Measurement of crystal angles, crystal projections. Crystal classes. Twin crystals and crystalline aggregates.
  • Principle of crystal structure, periodicity and symmetry. The lattice, the unit cell and the motif. Evidence of regular crystal structure. Bonding forces in crystals, the coordination principle. Isomorphism and polymorphism. X-ray analysis.
  • Physical properties of minerals, symmetry control of physical properties. Specific gravity; cleavage, parting and fracture; dissolution of crystals; heat flow in crystals; electrical and magnetic properties (piezoelectricity and pyroelectricity); radioactivity and luminiscence of minerals.
  • Optical properties of minerals: Colour and lustre of minerals. Optical isotropy and anisotropy. Optical properties of minerals (light velocity, refractive index and its measurement, birefringence, polarised light), polarisation microscope.
  • Origin and associations of minerals in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
  • Descriptive mineralogy. The classification and characterization of some major rock-forming minerals.
  • Petrology, significance and methods of the petrological research. Rocks and minerals. Classification of rocks in the earth,s crust. Properties of rocks (texture and structure, chemistry, mineral composition, physical properties).
  • Magma and igneous rocks. Nature and sources of magmas, physical properties of magma, crystallization and differentiation of magma. Mineralogical composition of igneous rocks. Textures and structures of igneous rocks. Nomenclature and classification of igneous rocks.
  • Origin of sedimentary rocks. Weathering of rocks. Transport and deposition. Diagenesis. Composition, textures and structures of sedimentary rocks. Classification and characterization of some sedimentary rocks.
  • Metamorphism and metamorphic rocks. Geological and petrological criteria for metamorphic processes. Conditions of metamorphism. Contact and regional metamorphism. Assessment methods (in Czech)
Výuka probíhá formou přednášek a cvičení, na nichž jsou posluchači seznamováni se základními vlastnostmi minerálů a hornin. Současně jsou jim demonstrovány vzorky nejvýznamnějších horninotvorných minerálů, hlavní typy magmatických, sedimentárních a metamorfovaných hornin. Podmínkou získání zápočtu je minimálně 80% účast na cvičeních. Zkouška probíhá ústní formou a její součástí je i praktická část vycházející z náplně cvičení.
