Course objectives
Main objective of the course is to give a basic knowledge in petrology, hydrogeology, geochemistry and morphology of karst terrains. The course is aimed to the students of bachelor programs.
Syllabus
  • Petrology of karst rocks:
  • karst rock environment, karst types, carbonate karst.
  • Karst hydrogeology:
  • karst rock porosity, karst water zonality, epikarst - vadose zone – phreatic zone interrelation of underground and surface waters, management of underground waters in karst.
  • Karst processes:
  • rock dissolution and mineral precipitation in karst, cave formation, speleothem formation.
  • Surface karst:
  • karst landscape, positive topography, negative topography, dissolution features.
  • Underground karst:
  • caves, cave systems, speleothems.
  • Cave infillings:
  • types, genesis, provenance.
