The course requires the basic knowledge of inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry. The course is offered to students in bachelor, master and PhD. study programs.

The student understands the importance of lanthanide not only in coordination chemistry but also in other branches of chemistry

  • 1. Lanthanides as rare elements? Discovery and occurrence Fundamental physico-chemical properties
  • 2. Coordination chemistry of lanthanides - Coordination numbers - Geometries
  • 3. Thermodynamics and kinetics - Simple coordination compounds - Extension to complex systems
  • 4. Supramolecular complexes - Design of self-assemblies - Methods of characterisation - Examples
  • 5. Bioanalytical applications I - Paramagnetic probes - MRI imaging
  • 6. Bioanalytical applications II - Optical probes - Immunoassays - Optical imaging
Assessment methods
The final exam will be tested by coloquium.
