Prerequisites
The lectures are held for students of biological disciplines (General Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Special Biology), eventually for others interested in virology.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
The capacity limit for the course is 20 student(s).
Current registration and enrolment status: enrolled: 0/20, only registered: 0/20, only registered with preference (fields directly associated with the programme): 0/20
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
  • Special Biology (programme PřF, N-EXB, specialization Mikrobiologie a molekulární biotechnologie)
Course objectives
After completing the course, the student will be able to describe, explain and apply basic mechanisms of virus-host interactions at the molecular, cellular and organismal level, will know basic metabolic and morphological changes occurring in virus infected cells and tissues, will be able to describe defense mechanisms of the host organism against viral infection and will know basic mechanism of tumor transformation induced by viruses. The information presented within this course will be useful further scientific career of the student in virology or in virological diagnostic laboratories.
Syllabus
  • Cellular response to viral infection: characterization of changes in the infected cells, adsorption and penetration, replication of viral genome, metabolic changes in the infected cells, morphological changes in the infected cells (changes of the cytoplasm and nucleus, ultrastructure and chemical properties of viral inclusions, „viral factories“, formation of multinuclear cells, effect of viral infection on cell cycle and chromosomes). Transformation of cells by viral infection. Mechanisms of pathogenesis of viral infections at the organismal level: virus crossing the epithelial barrier, virus replication in ligament and crossing the vascular endothelium, virus spread in blood, lymph and via nerves, susceptibility of host tissues to viral infection. Viral determinants of virulence. Pathogenesis of viral infections of respiratory tract. Pathogenesis of viral hepatitis. Pathogenesis of neuroviral infections. Pathogenesis of viral hemorrhagic fevers. Pathogenesis of congenital viral infections. Chronic viral infections. Host defense mechanisms against viral infection.
