- The main goal of this course is to provide the students with the basic knowledge about the echelle spectroscopy and usage of the Ondrejov Echelle Spectrograph (OES) for precise radial velocity observations of stars. The practice and data reduction of archival data with the IRAF package will be a substantial part of the course.
- Learning outcomes
- The attendant will gain general knowledge about the principles of the echelle spectroscopy and radial velocity measurements. The student will be able to use the IRAF package for reduction of the data obtained with the OES spectrograph and get the radial velocities. These skills are general and applicable to any echelle spectrograph.

- 1. Echelle spectroscopy and spectrographs 2. Ondrejov Echelle Spectrograph 3. Doppler effect and principles of radial velocity measurements 4. Phenomena affecting the precision of radial velocity measurements 5. Basic data reduction 6. Extraction of the spectra and wavelength calibration 7. Normalization of the spectra 8. Telluric correction 9. Heliocentric and barycentric correction 10. Radial velocity determination 11. Software for modelling the radial velocity curves

- The course will be held at the Astronomical Institute in Ondrejov in August 22-26, 2022. The accommodation will be secured in the institute dormitory for free. Because of the accommodation capacity, the number of attendants will be limited to 5 participants from the Masaryk University and to 10 participants in total from both Masaryk and Charles universities. We expect active involvement of the participants and recommend installing IRAF before the start of the course.
