Course objectives
The course aims to provide students with the basic orientation and structure for treating a selected scientific problem, as well as basic methodological procedures and rules for successful scientific publication in scientific journals.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: - plan, appropriately structure, and prepare scientific text, figures and tables - submit a scientific article to a selected journal, communicate with the publication system and respond to reviewers' comments, - to know about professional journals in cartography, geoinformatics and RS and their suitability for publication on the given topic, - actively work with citation databases.
Syllabus
  • The individual lecture blocks will focus on the issues listed below and will be accompanied by practical demonstrations. The course will be completed with credit. - Bibliographic databases, scientometrics and RIV - WoS, Scopus, Google Scholar, GeoRef, ScienceDirect, GeoscienceWorld and others; CrossLink, doi, open access - is it the future of publishing?, principles of scientometrics, RIV and recognizable outputs; online collection of self-citations - Researcher ID, Scopus ID, ORCID, ResearchGate, Academia.edu and others, - Philosophy and structure of scientific publication - why publish, the specific structure of an article in the field, the role of different parts of a manuscript, special types of articles, - why, how and what to cite, literature review, standard journal abbreviations; rules for ordering citations, bibliographic databases - EndNote, Reference Manager, Mendeley and others; automatic generation of reference lists in the required format, - publishing ethics, intellectual property and plagiarism, - English scientific style - main rules, tips and tricks, logical structure, argumentation, practical procedure of writing a scientific text, most common mistakes and pitfalls in English, - basic types of the publishing process - the work of the editorial board, the role of the editor, the reviewer, the review process, writing a cover letter, the most common reasons for rejection of an article and relevant reactions, preparing a revised manuscript, proofreading, - publishing opportunities in the field at home and abroad.

Presentations and practical demonstrations using the Internet.
