Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of the course is to motivate students to actively engage in science outreach activities organized by physics departments and to give them the opportunity to explore another aspect of scientific work – its communication to the public. The course is structured as selected chapters in science communication and includes lectures and discussions with guest speakers and instructors who are involved in science communication, public outreach, or media work.
Learning outcomes
As part of the course, student will become familiar with opportunities for science outreach in physics, science, and research at the physics departments of Masaryk University. They will actively participate in the preparation of outreach outputs, such as social media posts, and in a group project. The aim is to develop students’ ability to communicate scientific topics to the public and to gain new experiences that go beyond the scope of specialized physics knowledge.
Teaching methods
Lectures, discussions and group exercises and wokshops
Assessment methods
Credits are awarded based on the student’s active participation in science outreach activities. The activity can take various forms, such as: preparing and publishing a social media post (e.g. on Facebook or Instagram), creating another type of outreach output (e.g. an article, poster, or video), participating in outreach events organized by the physics departments (e.g. Open Days, science festivals), or contributing to the preparation of a joint outreach project.

A 1-credit grade is awarded for documented participation in at least one of the above-mentioned forms. A 2-credit grade is awarded to students who participate more than once or combine different types of activities (e.g. a social media post plus in-person participation in an event).
Language of instruction

Study Materials
The course is taught each semester.
The course is taught every week.
Teacher's information

The standard number of credits for completing the course is 1 credit. If a student registers for 2 credits, they commit to extended activity, meaning greater involvement in outreach efforts (e.g. a combination of social media posts, participation in events, and collaboration on projects).

Classes will only be held if at least 5 students enroll. If fewer than 5 students enroll, regular teaching will not take place. However, the option to earn credit remains — students may complete the course through individual activity under the specified conditions. Therefore, it is possible to register for the course even without scheduled classes.

The course is also listed under the following terms Spring 2025, Spring 2026.
