Syllabus
  • Geochemical cycles: migration of elements, differentiation of earth crust composition. Thermodynamical stability of rocks: igneous and metamorphic rocks, entropy, Gibb`s function, influence of p,T, and composition. Kinetic factors: ostwald`s step rule, interfacial surface energy, energy (entropy) barrier, rate of composition change. Interaction at phase boundary rock-water: diffusion and reaction model, TST-theory and theory of surface complex, irreversible and reversible processes, steady state, equilibrium. Interaction of dissolved species in solution: typical reactions, polymerization, condensation. Formation and precipitation of secondary mineral phases: supersaturation, diagrams of gibbsite and kaolinite solubility, formation of gibbsite and clay minerals. Thermodynamic models: systems of Na-Al-Si-H2O and K-Al-Si-H2O, reaction path, systems of Al-Si-pH, reaction paths. Kinetics: rate equations, rate constants, mass reservoirs, fluxes, modeling, computation. Landscape applications: formation of sediments, transport, mechanisms. Laterites, bauxites. Transport of dissolved weathering products in pore media.
