Course objectives
The course is composed in close relationship with petrology of igneous and motamorphosed rocks. It is aimed to study of genesis of so called "exotic" igneous rocks, it means the rocks, which are dislocated by some particularities from the common range of rocks. Discussed are mainly: rocks of "durbachite formation", lamprophyres, carbonatites, rocks of "theschenite formation" and kimberlites. Ultrabasic igneous rocks, komatiites and boninites.
Syllabus
  • Nature, origin and evolution (differentiation) melts. Petrogenesis of individual magma-types. Economic geology. Short overview of principal historic moments in the evolution of igneous petrology. The exotic igneous rocks. What are lamproites, durbachites, carbonatites, theschenites and kimberlites? Identification and nomenclature of closely related rock types. Classification and nomeclature of the lamprophyre, carbonatite, theschenite and kimberlite clans. Global distribution,of igneous associations. Field geology and petrology - Macroscopic and microscopic description. Cognate mineralogy. Whole-rock geochemistry: major and minor oxides, CIPW normative composition, trace elements. Inclusion suites: macrocrysts, xenocrysts, xenolits etc. The formation of magmatic rocks in the crust and mantle, physical properties of the magma, geotectonic position of igneous rocks - overview of models Plutonic and volcanic equivalents? Rock-forming minerals of igneous rocks, their formation, distribution, and importance for genetic conclusions. Chemical composition of igneous rocks, relation between chemical and mineral composition.
