Syllabus
  • 1. Phthalates: sources, indoor fate, inhalation & ingestion exposure routes. Phthalates rapidly metabolized. Health effects - interferes with male reproductive systems. Regulatory initiatives. 2. PBDEs: sources and inventory. The growth in production of electronics & electrical goods. Indoor, outdoor fate & uptake by food web. Growing mass of PBDEs in environment (e.g, lake sediments, soils). Our exposure indoors & food. Health effects, e.g., thyroid disregulation. Regulatory initiatives. 3. Bisphenol A: sources, toxicology & interface between toxicology and regulatory decision-making. Questions of how we're exposed. How do you make decisions in the face of scientific uncertainty and public pressure?
