Course objectives
Absolvents of this subject use the knowledge of genetics to genetic improvement of plants, which is the most effective, most ecological and most economical approach to yield increment and improvement of yield quality. They understand breeding methods, their possibilities and their limits. Interpret the knowledge also in seed technology, which is the practical application of the breeding in crop production. The acquired informations interpret also in relation to genetical transformations etc.
Syllabus
  • Genetic diversity (origin and decreasing, importance, protection). Source material and enlargement of the genetic variability (crossing, mutagenesis, polyploidisation, biotechnological methods). Molecular markers (proteins, DNA). General principles of plant breeding (strategy, plant reproduction, selection theory, effects of genes, heritability, inbreeding, heterosis, response on selection, indirect selection, interaction of genotype with environment, analysis of adaptation of varieties, variety and its types). Breeding of varieties-lines (pure lines, general characters of varieties-lines, mass selection, pedigree method, bulk method, single-seed-descent, back-cross, dihaploids). Breeding of hybrid varieties (combining ability, male sterility, types of hybrids). Breeding of varieties-populations (mass selection, recurrent selection, synthetic varieties). Breeding of varieties-clones. Breeding for resistance to pests and diseases (the relationship host-pathogen, general mechanisms of plants´ protection against diseases, mechanisms of resistance to pests, breeding for specific resistance, breeding for general resistance, screening for resistance, selection using molecular markers). Maintenance of varieties.
