Prerequisites
E0350 Epidemiology
This subject provides an introduction to social epidemiology and population health, and does not require previous attandance of other subjects. However, knowledge of epidemiology (as covered in the course E0350 Epidemiology) gives students a great advantage and facilitates understanding of the lectures.

Course objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce students to social determinants of health and to provide overview of the effects of social environment and socioeconomic factors on human health.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- define main measures of health of populations and the main social determinants of health
- explain the main indicator of socioeconomic position
- define the main psychosocial factors influencing health
- understand the mechansims, and chains of causes, linking social factors with health
- assess the importance of social inequalities for population health
- explain global inequalities in health and their main causes
- understand the significance of social determinants of health for health and social policy

Teaching methods
Education is performed as lectures and interactive seminars, with emphasis on understanding of main concepts, mechanisms and contexts. Students are frequently asked questions to think about the topic and given model problems to work with.
Assessment methods
Attendance of lectures is not compulsory but it is strongly recommended for understanding of the topic covered by the course. During interactive teaching, students are asked questions on the material covered in the session. Final assessment at the end of the term is conducted as written exam - short written answers or explanations to several question. Each question has a given value in points, the total sum of all points is 100. A minimum of 50 points is required to pass the exam.
