- Course objectives
- The lecture presents a comprehensive overview concerning practical use of fungi, algae and cyanobacteria as natural sources in biotechnology. Practically useful knowledge is emphasized in this course; general analysis of particular issues will be followed by presentation of methodological procedures, based on examples of specific agents in individual lessons.
- Learning outcomes
- During this course the students get knowledge about useful and harmful species or groups of cyanobacteria, algae and fungi.
At the end they should be able to explain the application of traditional procedures as well as modern biotechnologies using these organisms in practice. - Syllabus
- (1) Introduction to biotechnology
- (2) Cultivation of cyanobacteria, algae and fungi
- (3) Metabolism of cyanobacteria, algae and fungi
- (4) Toxic metabolites of fungi, poisonous toadstools and toxins of microscopic fungi, possibilities of risk elimination
- (5) Cyanobacteria and algae as nutritional supplements, algae in traditional medicine
- (6) Biofuel production using cyanobacteria and algae
- (7) Gene and metabolic engineering of cyanobacteria and algae
- (8) Yeasts and filamentous fungi in classic biotechnology
- (9) Yeasts as expression system in molecular biotechnology
- (10) Fungi in traditional medicine, antibiotics
- (11) Exploitation of fungi for natural substances production, fungi as industrial chassis
- (12) Fungi as biocontrol agents in agriculture, phytopathogenic fungi and their elimination
- (13) Fungi as nutrition sources, cultivation of edible mushrooms
