Prerequisites
This subject provides an introduction to demography and social determinants of health, and does not require previous attendance of other subjects. However, knowledge of basics of population health (e.g., as covered in the course E2040) gives students a great advantage and facilitates understanding of the lectures.

Course objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce students with basic concepts and terminology used in demography and social epidemiology. Students will be introduced to epidemiology and demographic transition. They should also be introduced to sources of data used in measuring population health. Furthermore, in second part of the course, they will be introduced to theme of social inequalities in health, social determinants of health and measurement of health inequalities.
Learning outcomes
After this course, students will be able to: - define health, population health, main indicators of health - understand principles of epidemiologic and demographic transition - define social determinants of health - name the main indicators of socioeconomic position - describe the main psychosocial factors - understand the pathways linking social factors with health, including the long chain of causation linking social determinants with health - appreciate the importance of social inequalities in health

Teaching methods
Education is performed as interactive lectures, with emphasis on understanding of main concepts, mechanisms and contexts. Students are frequently asked questions to think about the topic and given model problems to work with.
Assessment methods
The work and activity of students is monitored and evaluated throughout the semester. The condition of attending the course is to attend at least 80% of the seminars. The condition is also the submission of the given seminar work. At the final seminar, a colloquium will be held with a summary panel discussion.
