Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the basic theoretical concepts and models used in settlement geography - they are employed to depict the development of the European and Czech settlement system. Furthermore, the current state of Czech and European settlements is presented and discussed as well as the processes and actors of current settlement changes.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will:
- know the concepts and theories used to describe the settlement system;
- be able to analyze and interpret the hierarchical and functional organization of the settlement system;
- have an overview of the development and state of the Czech and European settlement system;
- be able to design and evaluate settlement planning interventions and activities.
Syllabus
  • Content of lectures:
  • 1. research subject of settlement geography, settlement systems - definitions, properties, scale
  • 2. study of settlement system, hierarchies and networks
  • 3. static models and theories of settlement systems, central place theory, rank-size models
  • 4. dynamic models and theories of settlement systems, colonization models, Gibrat’s model and evolutional theories
  • 5. historical development of the European settlement system, Braudel, de Vries
  • 6. modern European urbanization, differential urbanization
  • 7. non-European settlement systems
  • 8. historical development of the Czech settlement system
  • 9. the current state of the settlement of the Czech Republic, processes and changes
  • 10. settlement policies and planning actions

Check-up of elaborated seminar papers.
Written exam (the exam includes the topics discussed within the course). A written test usually consists of 10 questions rated in total by 30 points; to pass successfully the exam, you need to achieve at least 16 points.
