Course objectives
The course is a direct continuation of the course Z0043 Geography of population and settlements I. The basic knowledge of demography is recapitulated in the first lectures in the form of overview of demographic development in the Czech Republic and Europe. The rest of the course is composed of four sections: (1) spatial mobility of population (migration and commuting), (2) socioeconomic and sociocultural structure of population, (3) geography of settlement and settlement systems, incl. urban geography, and (4) historical development of population of the Czech Lands. Methods and technics discussed in the lectures are practised in seminars, where students prepare seminar paper "Complex population and settlement characterization of the district ...".
Syllabus
  • 1. Spatial mobility of population, its forms. Migration: basic knowledge of migration ("migration laws"), demographic structure, motivation of migration,development of internal migration in the Czech Republic. 2. Migration: analytic indicators, migration attractivity, modelling of migration. 3. International migration. Overview of major migrations in history. 4. Relationship between migration and natural development of population. 5. Commuting to work and to schools (in the Czech Republic). Utilization of commuting data for geographical regionalization. 6. Socioeconomic and sociocultural structure of population: economic activity, education, languages, nationality, religion. 7. Approaches to geographical studies of settlements and settlement systems. Development of settlements: rural and urban. 8. Definition of a town. Functions of settlements. 9. Urbanization. Settlement systems. 10. Rank size rule, central place theory. 11. Urban geography. Internal structure of cities. 12. Development of population and settlement of the Czech Lands: a)prehistoric period (archeological cultures), b) the Middle Ages (data sources, colonization, founding of towns), c) protostatistic period d) modern era.
