Course objectives
The major aim of the course is to overcome students' fear of the command line. In the course we will focus on basic operations and data manipulation in R. After the completing of the course, students ought to be eager to work in R and able to carry out all data operations necessary for data analysis and graphical presentation. This course is a prerequisite for follow-up classes devoted to data analysis Bi5560 Basics of statistics for biologists II and Bi7540 Data analysis in community ecology and will be useful for Bi7920 Analysis of biological data as well.
Learning outcomes
After attending the course the student will be able to:
- orientate in an R script,
- import data into R,
- create various objects and understand the difference among object classes,
- make selections,
- create basic graphs.

  • Instalation of R and editor RStudio (working environment)
  • R as calculator
  • Handling with vectors
  • Subsets, samples, logical statements
  • Objects of matrices
  • Lists and installation of more functions (packages)
  • Data frames
  • Data import and export
  • Factors: subsets, graphs
  • Factors II: advanced functions
  • Overview of basic graphs
  • Simple loops
  • Handling with chain of characters

Teaching methods
The course will take the form of a weekly practical presentation with additional task for home training. The course will take place in the computer room in the University Campus Bohunice. The course will be taught in Czech only.

A practical test with a new data set.
