Course objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students with practical skills in identifying bryophytes and lichens of the Czech Republic and, potentially, neighboring countries. The course is conducted in block form as a field-based program, including excursions during which students, under the guidance of experts, explore diverse habitats and learn to identify bryophyte and lichen species in their natural environments. Evening sessions are dedicated to the practical identification of collected specimens using specialized literature and microscopy. The course concludes with a determination test. This course is ideal for students with an interest in bryology, lichenology, and field botany.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
- distinguish different species of mosses or lichenes in the field;
- identify in the field common species of bryophytes or lichenes occurring in a given habitat;
- work with identification keys using a microscope and binocular magnifier;
- describe the morphological specificities of some species;
Syllabus
  • The exercise includes two half-day and two full-day field trips to various habitats. During the field trips, the species found are demonstrated, and students are expected to participate actively in the search for them.
  • The area visited varies for each course run, and potential opportunities cover the entire CZ and SK region.
  • In addition, the course includes three evening determinations of collected samples under the microscope.
