Introduction and information
Seminar information
- One lesson a week
- Compulsory attendance (missing one lesson without apologise or two with apologise is tolerated)
- Active participation in lessons (discussion, workshop, project, games...)
- E-learning, reading texts and working in the interactive syllabus
- Inserting homeworks into folder odevzdavarna in two weeks!
If you have some questions or problems with homeworks, do not hesitate and write me mail:
217989@mail.muni.cz
First homework
Write a short essay (max. 1 page) on the topic of quality of life:
- What is your quality of life definition? What do you imagine if anybody says quality of life?
- What does it mean for you?
Do not search the definitions in the literature and in the internet as well.
Just think about that and try to write your ongoing ideas (like freewriting, however with corrections).
I recommend you only this video (actually whole movie) for the inspiration:

Please insert this essay in .doc form into odevzdavarna, folder seminar_1 on Monday 4th at the latest!
Task to next lesson
Prepare a talk about the relationship between geography and quality of life.
Try to answer on these questions:
- How can you look at quality of life as a geographer?
- What is the geographical definition of quality of life?
- What quality of life aspects are you interested in (of course, as geographer)?
- How could the geography be useful in sight of quality of life?
- What is the importance of geography in the research on quality of life?
- What are the key questions of the research on the quality of life for geographers?
Do not afraid if you do not know answers, but try to use your present knowledge to think what geographical aspects are included in QoL concept...
Quality of life and geography
Geography - Quality of life
R. Peet: "Geography is the study of relations between society and the natural environment
- > Geography tends to understand and interpret relations between people and their environment
as well as how we are affected our environment and how we influence this environment
- > Quality of life is concerned with this kind of relationship as well
Quality of life is the multidimensional phenomenon <-> geography is the interdisciplinary science that has preconditions to study it!
Task to next lesson
Imagine that you are a person who lives somewhere in the third world.
Make up your new complete identity:
- name
- gender
- age
- occupation
- nationality
- religion
- social position
- marital status...
Think of your quality of life, especially, what factors influence your quality of life (objective conditions x state of mind).
Prepare a speech about yourself and your quality of life to the next lesson.
Geographical aspects of quality of life
Second homework
- Choose your or the other person's culture background (from Kenya, Cuba, Burma or Russia) and think what factors are the most important for the quality of life of the inhabitants in this country
- Write this contemplation from your point of view on a half of a page and insert into odevzdavarna
Task to next lesson
- Please read the following text (written by I. Kamp et al.) up to page 6 (2 chapters) and underline what is really important
- Try to answer on these questions after reading this text:
- > What is the best geographical definition of quality of life according to you?
- > Why do so many concepts exist? How are they related to quality of life?
- > Which approach / conceptualization is the most suitable to geographical definition of quality of life?
We will discuss the meta-concepts next lesson.
Quality of life and other meta-concepts
Quality of life and other meta-concepts
Quality of life as a multidimensional container concept
-> encompassing environmental quality, livability, satisfaction, happiness, well-being, health...
-> various implications of the models depend on:
- relevant domains
- indicators
- scale levels
- causality...
Task to next lesson
- choose one of the meta-concepts (environmental quality, livability, well-being, happiness, satisfaction...) related to quality of life and contextualize your quality of life inside this concept (just prepare a speech)
- choose the subjective or the objective dimension and describe the other through the first one (e.g. your subjective dimension through livability or environmental quality)
Dualism of QoL
Relationship between internal and external dimension vs. subjective and objective dimension
- Do these dimensions really exist? Or is it only the construct?
- What is the relation between them? Are they (in)dependent on each other? How are they connected?
- Is it possible to apply one holistic approach to conceptualize both dimensions of quality of life?
- > the role of our perception and evaluation according to our needs, values, expectations...
- > hedonia x eudaimonia
For more information -> 1st chapter of Phillips' publication
QoL domains
QoL domains
-> effort to involve all the realms of human life (objective x subjective factors)
- > example of definition of main domains of quality of life (and their attributes)
- economic dimension (incl. financial security, economic freedom, employment, job opportunity...)
- material dimension (housing, living condition, livability...)
- environmental dimension (natural environment, pollution, noise...)
- physical health (wellness, health care...)
- political dimension (democracy, freedom, independency...)
- social dimension (social inclusion, security, stability, trust...)
- mental health (satisfaction, self-realization, well-being...)
- > choosing the important domains and consequently the indicators of quality of life according to:
- experts, literature...
- brainstorming, pre-research, "in my opinion"
- avalaibility of datas, indicators...
Third homework
- define 10 indicators for the most important aspects of quality of life (select from those from the seminar)
- find 10 real indicators that can be measured in Czech regions (kraje or SO ORP)
and which are available on the webpages (czso, mmr, mpsv, chmi...)
- write the deliminations and sources and insert them into odevzdavarna folder
- bring the notes about indicators to the next lesson
Indicators and measurement of QoL
Task to next lesson
Think about these questions and prepare a speech:
- what is a relation between objective and subjective indicators of quality of life?
- which indicators are more important are more reflective to the reality? Objective or subjective?
Methodology of the research
Methodology of the geographical research on QoL
Quantitative methods:
- statistical analysis of objective dimension
- social indicators
- indicators of living conditions
- statistical analysis of subjective dimension
- > using a multivariate methods (factor, principal component analysis)
Qualitative methods:
- questionnaire, in-depth interview, observation, mental mapping, ethnometodology, alternative methods...
- > emphasizing of the description and interpretation of situation
- > which aspects of quality of life are inquired?
- > which method is preferd? why?
- > what are the results of this research? fo who? how could we interpret them?
How to prepare research:
- you should frame:
- research problem (quality of life?)
- research topic (quality of life in a region, in some communities..)
- research question
- you should define:
- goals of the research
- focus group + focus region
- evaluation, interpretation, for who it is intended
- capacities x constraints (money, collaborators, time...)
- > appropriate methods for specific research on quality of life
Fourth homework
- suggest and write a methodical approach for specific geographical research on the subjective dimension of quality of life
- follow the points (framing problem, question) and finally suggest an appropriate method for measuring (community) quality of life
- think of innovativeness and feasibility
- insert into odevzdavarna folder in two weeks
QoL and sustainability
Quality of life and sustainability
Relation between sustainability and quality of life - > overlapping metaconcepts (approach to person – environment relationship), but...
- different time scale-level, determinants, indicators…
- different relative importance given to environmental exposure, methods to measure…
QoL – more approaches and concepts x sustainability – normative concept
QoL – evaluation of the current situation x sustainability – aim, planning and future
Conflicts? Hedonistic well-being x strong environmental sustainability
- > find a balance between two competing perspectives
Task to next lesson
Think of how to implement sustainable point of view in QoL research
- Should the geography help people to improve quality of life? Should we participate in this process?
Geographical QoL research
Task to next lesson
- think about specific research area in Brno
- suggest your research area
- follow the interactive syllabus - > answer the questions in ROPOT
Projection of movie HAPPY
Projection of movie HAPPY
The film directed by Roko Belic explores the secrets behind our most valued emotion and sets out to answer on the questions:
- Does money make us happy? What else? Kids and family? Our work?
- Do we live in a world that values and promotes happiness and well-being? Are we in the midst of a happiness revolution?
