The follow-up Master's degree programme of Social Geography and Regional Development aims at obtaining a relatively broad basic geographical knowledge and skills enabling the deeper understanding of events relevant for the regional dimensions of economic and social development. A broad scale of approaches to a region, as well as analytical skills and ability to select appropriate directions of regional development in the conditions of sustainable development, constitute the main focus of the studies. The students broaden their knowledge of geographical and related disciplines, methods, and techniques of the geographical analysis, and also improve their ability to interpret the current social, economic, and political processes independently and at different levels. The graduates obtain a good overview of geographical and related connected disciplines, and also a sufficient knowledge enabling them to conduct independent empirical analyses. The graduates will be prepared for their work in the regional development - as individuals, and also as team members. Their professional abilities should be characterised by a great deal of adaptation in the context of the specialization of such organizations and teams.

The standard duration of studies is four semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination students must earn a total of 120 ECTS credits for required, selective, and elective courses. Required courses constitute the basis of the social-geographical courses, and they make up, together with the courses preparing the students for their Bachelor's thesis, the total of 63 credits.

Other recommended elective courses contribute to the extension of the given scientific knowledge and assist students in their preparation of the Master's theses. The students should earn a minimum of 39 credits for these courses.

The remaining 18 credits can be earned in any optional courses offered in the study plan of the given degree programme, or in other courses offered in other study programmes.

During the course of their studies students should follow the Course Catalogue of Geography for the given matriculation year. They can access the Course Catalogues of other programmes or faculties through the faculty/University web pages.

Within the recommended elective courses, the practical training in Geography and Cartography at various institutions selected by students is included in the 2nd and 3rd semesters, always in the duration of 2 weeks.

The studies are completed with the Master's state examination consisting of the defence of the Master's thesis and oral examination. The prerequisite for the access to the Master's state examination is earning at least 120 credits in the determined structure, and submitting the Master's thesis.

The oral part of the Master's state examination consists of individual courses - divided into required courses (General Regional and Human Geography),selective courses (Geographical Aspects of Public Administration and Regional Development, Regional Geography of Europe and European Integration), and elective courses (World Regional Geography, Applied Human and Regional Geography). Students always choose from those offered by the Department of Geography. For each of these courses the basic specific areas for examinations are given on the website.

In the Master's theses students show their ability to solve professional problems, including working with literature, apply knowledge of basic research, field and computer methods, elaborate and interpret results, and present them. Topics of the Master's theses are published by the Department of Geography on the basis of staff proposals - they are currently available in the Information System of MU. The students choose the topic from this offer, but they have also the possibility to suggest their own topics to the potential supervisors. The content and form of the Master's thesis are determined by particular supervisors. The final evaluation of the Master's thesis has the form of a public discussion.
