Today, narratology represents, first of all, a methodological fundament which can be used for a set of theoretical and practical approaches to the enquiry of narrative. Firstly developed in the field of literature, narratology has spread to various scholarly disciplines, such as art theory, history, sociology, and human sciences. The specifics which narratology encounters in particular disciplines determine its dynamic and rapid development. Narratology has been cultivated in various scholarly approaches and disciplines and the scope of its interest is constantly growing - intermediality, thus, bacame one of the most important characteristics of modern narratology.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • Identify the most important narratological notions and conceptions.
  • Apply these motions and conceptions to the analyses of particular narrative works.
  • Critically compare essential narratological concepts and strategies in the intermedial perspective.
  • View the development of the discipline.

The graduates of the program will by able to apply gained knowledge and skills to various theoretical and practical scholarly disciplines which are affiliated to narratives and narratology, such as the art theory and linguistics, on the one side, and psychology, sociology and human sciences, on the other.

The standard length of the study is four semesters. It is necessary to obtain a total of at least 120 credits both for type A/required as well as type B/selective and type C/selective courses. The student curriculum is according to the study catalogue corresponding to their matriculation year.

The final examination consists of three separate oral questions, given according to the list published on the website of the Institute of Linguistics, one year in advance (http://www.phil.muni.cz/jazyk/studium.html#okru). The final mark is an average of the partial marks for the given questions.
