The inquiry-based study programme of Geology focuses on the basics of the individual geological disciplines. It comprises the core courses of physical geology, tectonics, paleontology, historical geology, regional geology, mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry. Also the practical training and field work form a part of the studies. The students can specialize in the problems of the chosen specialization of their interest - paleontology, mineralogy, speleology, geology-archeology,environmental geology, and others.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • explain and use geological terminology
  • recognize principal minerals, rocks, fossils, and structures
  • master the common geological research methods used in field work and laboratory work
  • solve particular geological problems independently, interpret results of the research, and present the obtained information in written and oral forms
  • work independently with the Czech and foreign literature
  • process the obtained data using the appropriate information technology

The graduates can find employment in institutions and companies conducting geological surveys, and also in cultural and educational institutions or universities, environmental organizations, and public administration. They can work in basic and applied research, managerial professions, and in all areas where both theoretical and practical knowledge of geology is required.

The standard duration of studies is six semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination students must earn a total of 180 credits for required, selective, and elective courses. The students must complete all required, three selective, and a specified number of elective specialized courses so that the total number of credits for all specialized courses is at least 162. The remaining 18 credits can be earned in optional courses of their study programme, or in the courses offered by other study programmes. During the course of their studies students should follow the Course Catalogue for their year of matriculation. They can access the Course Catalogues through the faculty website.

(?)

The course of field documentation and practical exercises for the required courses are obligatory, while field exercises and excursions are optional.

(?)

The final state examination consists of two parts: 1) theoretical examination - usually a written test, and 2) the defence of the thesis. The theoretical knowledge test covers the knowledge obtained in required courses.

After completing the Bachelor's degree programme in Geology the graduates can continue in the same Master's degree programme or in other fields of the study programme of Geology.
