The study programme Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) concentrates on providing basic knowledge in the area of AI, i.e. computer systems that can model some functions of the human brain and selected types of the human behaviour. Closely related is the NLP specialisation, which deals with "human" languages such as Czech, English, etc. both in written and spoken form from the point of view of informatics.


After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • implement and exploit intelligent systems efficiently;
  • use fundamentals of machine learning, knowledge representation and its management, text and data mining;
  • identify problems asnwerable by AI methods and choose AI methods suitable to solving a given problem;
  • select, perform and summarize an empirical evaluation of different algorithms on a problem formalisation.

Graduates of this study programme can use the gained knowledge in industry, for example, in any position requiring the design of intelligent systems, control and optimisation of manufacturing processes or advanced data analysis.


Standard duration of studies is six semesters. In order to be admitted to take the final state examination, students must acquire in total 180 ECTS credits for required, selective and elective courses. Required subjects constitute the basis of the disciplines. Students choose the selective courses according to their interests and intended professional specialisation. During the course of their studies, students should follow the course catalogue for their year of matriculation. The catalogue shows a recommended course of study including suggestions for selective courses.

Practical Training is not a direct part of the study. Students can take part in project activities of the Natural Language Processing Centre or the Knowledge Discovery Group aiming at the solutions of particular tasks from the areas of text processing, knowledge mining, machine learning and other artificial intelligence methods.


The final state examination consists of a Bachelor's thesis defence and an oral exam aimed at checking the field-related knowledge of the students. Two questions are randomly drawn for each students before the oral exam. The student is allocated thirty minutes to answer these questions in writing. This written preparation is given to the committee and it constitutes a part of the official protocol about the final exam. Committee members are allowed to ask additional questions to the written preparation, and about other topics related to the drawn questions. The final state examination typically takes about thirty minutes, half of which is taken by the thesis defence and half by the oral exam.

Graduates can continue to study any Master's degree programme at the Faculty of informatics. Students can prepare for any of these programmes by choosing elective courses according to their interests.
