General Physics (Eng.)“Physics - the basis of science. Understanding physics in a wider context - the way to erudition” |
This PhD study programme is designed for holders of Master's degree in physics and related programmes, including teaching physics. It covers a broad spectrum of general problems of physics, namely mechanics of mass particles and their systems, continuum mechanics, theory of relativity, field theory, quantum and statistical physics, astronomy and astrophysics. It includes interdisciplinary studies as well, e.g. geometrical approaches to variational mechanics and field theories. According to students' interest, the study of these disciplines can be directed to gaining results that could be employed in the physical educational process, including creation of equipment for demonstrating experiments, alternative study texts, popularization texts or texts for e-learning.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- demonstrate excellent knowledge in general mathematics and physics
- independently approach solving complex general problems in physics (formulation, solution with appropriate mathematical tools, interpretation, experiments)
- work as a highly qualified scientist in physics
- carry out scientific work leading to publications in renowned physical journals
- communicate actively in English or another language
- use the skills in computational techniques
- use the experimental methods and laboratory techniques (in the case of experimental specializations)
The graduates can become highly qualified scientists at universities, scientific institutes, laboratories, etc., or they are highly qualified teachers at high schools. They can successfully work also in other institutions connected with research and education, e.g. in managerial positions.
The concept of a recommended study plan:
Doctoral studies are based on independent work of a student, which is proved by the creation and defence of a doctoral dissertation. The study is controlled by an individual study plan with following parts, including preparation of the thesis:
(A) courses concerning scientific area beyond the Master's study level,
(B) courses aiming at obtaining deeper knowledge in the specialization,
(C) specialist scientific seminars,
(D) teaching assistance in Bachelor's and Master's studies
The study is completed upon passing the doctoral state examination and the defence of a thesis. ( the Study and Examination Regulations of Masaryk University: http://www.muni.cz/general/legal_standards/study_examination_regulations).
The state examination is oral, and lasts 120 minutes at most. Presenting the problem and current results of a thesis is an obligatory part of the examination. The examination also includes questions concerning fundamental problems in physics and those concerning the specialisation given by the topic of the thesis, including new scientific results.
As for fundamental problems in physics the following literature is recommended:
