Course objectives
The second part of the two-semester cycle, in which an advanced knowledge of Lithuanian morphology and syntax is already acquired. The aim of this course is to get to know the Lithuanian also from a pragmatic, dialectological and sociolinguistic point of view. Students will also be introduced to current research on Lithuanian, based on the modern linguistic approaches.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to:
- describe Lithuanian from a pragmatically;
- describe Lithuanian from a dialectologically;
- describe Lithuanian from a sociolinguistically;
- to become familiar with current researches of the Lithuanian language.
Syllabus
  • Pragmatics: information structure; topic (theme) and comment (rheme); sentence and utterance;
  • Dialektology: standard language and dialect; Lithuanian dialects, their regional and linguistic characteristics; authentic examples of Lithuanian dialects;
  • Sociolinguistics: Lithuanian language and its anchoring in Lithuanian society; language policy and language planning in Lithuania;
  • Introduction to modern linguistics: Lithuanian in Corpus Linguistics; Lithuanian in Applied Linguistics; Lithuanian in Cognitive Linguistics; Lithuanian in Experimental Linguistics

Teaching methods
Lectures, individual reading, discussions.
Assessment methods
Work in lessons, individual reading, active participation in discussions on different texts. A final assessment is a paper in which the student presents the content of a chosen linguistic article related to one of the discussed topics.
