Course objectives
The course focuses on sociology as a science concerned with the structure and dynamic development of modern society as well as with the social structure and the development itself. The main course frame is based on the discipline of economic sociology.
The course is structured according to three main goals:
1. Introduction of students to sociology as a science that deals with modern (industrial) society. Students will get a chance to understand the relationship between sociological and economic perspective and they can adopt basic sociological concepts for the description of a social structure.
2. Getting a basic orientation in the social development and social structure. Students will be introduced to basic sociological concepts that are relevant for understanding the function of complex market societies. The lectures will also include concepts of social organization and institutions, culture and symbolic communication, social stratification and inequality and transition to post-industrial society. The lectures will emphasize the ability of students to see the market life from a broader frame of reference.
3. Introduction of the main methodological procedures of the sociological research. Students attending the daily program will - in addition - get a chance to experiment the elementary application of the basic research procedures.

Assessment methods
The course is concluded with a written exam; students are eligible to take the written exam provided that they fulfill given conditions:
1. achieving 75% attendance in seminars and active participation,
2. presentation of a (short) paper,
3. elaboration of a research project.
A minimum score of 60% is recquired for passing the exam.
Important information! If students commit a prohibited act, such as using various forbidden tools, cribbing, taking out any part of the exam or any other cheating, the teacher is allowed to interrupt an exam and to grade a student with F, FF or FFF according to the seriousness of the offence. The mentioned procedure relates to all the activities that are included in the final evaluation of the course (seminar work, essays, tests etc.).
