Course objectives
The goal of the course is to teach students the principles of database systems and their applications.
Syllabus
  • Basic terms, database, entity, attributes. Database schema,logical, physical. Database models hierarchical, network, relational (relational schema).
  • Data definition language. Data manipulation language. Query languages, relational algebra, relational calculus (domain, tuple). SQL standards, application in database systems.
  • Data definition design, functional dependencies, keys, Armstrong axioms, normal forms.
  • Implementation of database systems, transaction processing, replication and distributed databases. Commercial database products.
  • Information systems and database systems. The role of databases in information systems. Homogeneous and heterogeneous database environments. Database access technology. Databases and management. Text and document databases. Data warehouses and multidimensional databases.
