- Course objectives
- The main purpose of this subject is to receive basic knowledge about balneology. It´s a branch about therapeutical mineral water, spas and their preventive and therapeutical effect on a human body. Students can meet with biophysical effects of hydrotherapy, termotherapy and physiological answer of organism on specific procedures application during a term. Student should have actual information about spa´s bussiness, indications, contraindications and risks of specific procedures applicatons. An important part of this subject is a prescription of spa´s stay and possibilities for choice of one in the Czech republic and the Slovak republic.
- Syllabus
- Introduction in Balneotherapy and Balneology. History of Baths.
- Main therapeutical methods and procedures used in Balneology.
- Usage of physical therapy effects in Balneology. Physiological answer of organism and corresponding methods.
- Mineral waters and their composition. Corresponding spas and their overbearing mineral sources.
- Dividing of Hydrotherapy (according to square and ways of application, temperature). Possibilities of spas.
- Peloids and their usage. Mud-baths and their process. Paraffin wraps.
- Climate therapy.
- Sauna therapy. Types of saunas and their effects.
- Spa areas in the Czech Republic and in the world (history, geographic location, specificity of therapy including knowledge of the main group of illnesses.
- Curative stays. Indicator group. Indicator list.
- Types of spa treatment. Procedure including request and approval of spa stay.

- Assessment methods
- Mandatory participation at half-day excursion. Essay on the topic Charakteristic of the spa (according to own choice) in the Czech Republic or in the world (three pages A4, Times New Roman font, size 12). Final test.
