Course objectives
The aim of the course is to equip students with the knowledge that will enable them to understand the logic of quantitative research in the social sciences, specifically focusing on anthropological research. This understanding will enable them to (a) design their own research project where appropriate and (b) critically evaluate, interpret and use the results of quantitative research. Throughout the semester, we will focus on the philosophical underpinnings of quantitative approaches, research design procedures, and outline basic principles of data analysis.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the students will be able to: Design a quantitative research project Define the conditions of sample representativeness Design a representative sample from a population Create a quantitative data collection tool Implement a simple online questionnaire for data collection Analyze data using statistical software Critically evaluate the research conducted Interpret the results of quantitative research
Syllabus
  • Scientific investigation - a reminder of the philosophical foundations Elements of research practice - theories, models, concepts, hypotheses Conceptualisation and operationalisation Forms of representativeness Research design - types of quantitative approaches Quantitative data collection techniques Introduction to analysis: descriptive analysis numerically and graphically Hypothesis testing: substantive hypotheses and statistical inference Dependency analysis - basic techniques Dependency analysis - principles of more advanced methods (regression, models)

Teacher's information
The seminar form of teaching the course emphasizes continuous work leading to the preparation of project tasks that simulate a research proposal. The course is divided into three blocks, the purpose of which is to recall the philosophical foundations of quantitative methodology in the social sciences, to go through the basic stages of the research process, and finally to explain the logic of statistical analysis and data interpretation within a quantitative approach in the social sciences. This syllabus is a proposal for the structure of the course and the content of the individual sessions, but the final form of the course may be significantly influenced by the needs and active approach of the learners - different demands, needs and approaches need to be taken into account.
