- Course objectives
- The goal of the course is to get the students acquainted with the most important political philosophers and their contributions to political thinking. The students will be introduced to key concepts of Western political philosophy. It is necessary that the students follow the program of readings specified in this syllabus.
- Syllabus
- 1. week The students get familiar with the syllabus. Consultation 2. week Study program: Political philosophy before Plato, Socrates, and Plato. Reading: see below. 3. week Study program: Aristotle, political philosophy after Aristotle and Roman political thinking. Reading: see below. 4. week Study program: Christian political thinking, the fathers of the church (Augustine) and scholastics (Thomas Aquinas). Reading: see below. 5. week Study program: The dawn of the modern age: Machiavelli. Reading: see below. 6. week Study program: Social contract theories (Hobbes and Locke). Reading: see below. 7. week Study program: Enlightenment in France, Montesquieu and Rousseau. Reading: see below. 8. week Study program: Enlightenment and deontology (Kant). Reading: see below. 9. week Study program: Conservatism (Burke). Reading: see below. 10. week Study program: Revolutionary humanism (Marx). Reading: see below. 11. week Study program: Modernity and the politics of the 20th century (Weber) Reading: see below. Consultation Deadline for the essay! 12. week The students are supposed to finish compulsory readings. 13. week The students start preparation for the final examination.
- Assessment methods (in Czech)
- Kurs je ukončen zkouškou. Podmínkou připuštění k testu je odevzdání seminární práce (délka 8-10 normostran). Délka testu - 60 minut. Podoba testu: čtyři otázky týkající se probíraných témat. Odpovědi budou hodnoceny na škále 0-5 bodů (maximum je tedy 20 bodů). Minimum pro úspěšné zakončení kursu je 12 bodů.
