Course objectives
The basic aim of the course seeks to uncover the interdependence between the biographical experience of individual social actors and historical dynamics of the institutional structures of society. At the end of this course, students should be able:
(a) to understand basic concepts of sociology. (b) to formulate interpretations of social phenomena by means of sociological concepts.

  • Sociology and critical thinking
  • Sociology and research
  • Sociology and theory
  • Culture, socialization and the individual
  • Social interaction and social relationships
  • Social norms, conformity and deviance.
  • Stratification, socia classes and ethnic groups.
  • Statem, government and political power.
  • Ideology and cultural change.

Teaching methods
lectures, group project, midterm papers.
Assessment methods
The course is finished by an examination. To obtain credits students have to write three papers during the term: Two short essays dealing with a textual interpretation of Ch.W. Mills's Sociological Imagintaion respective with Zygmunt Bauman's book Thinking Sociologically. The third, longer paper, is a result of a group project in which students try to develop a sociological interpretation of their secondary school experiences.
Course requirements: (a) group project paper, (c) written exam.
