Course objectives
The course aims to increase students' understanding of the life situation of offenders and their families with an emphasis on the dynamics of family and social functioning. Students will be introduced to contemporary theories of criminology, penology and social work with offenders and their families. Special attention will be given to the dynamics of the relationship between incarcerated individuals and their spouses/partners as well as changes in relationships with their children. Dilemmas that arise when working with offenders, their families and children will be reflected upon with students. The course also emphasises young offenders, understanding the causes of their offending and offers current trends in working with this group of young people. Students will also be introduced to the principles of restorative justice and its use with offenders. Given that the basic premise of the course is the application of multidisciplinarity and multi-institutionalism in improving the living situation and social functioning of families, it is anticipated that students will have the opportunity to hear from speakers from organizations and institutions that work with offenders or their family members.
