Prerequisites

The students must have at least an intermediate level of general English (B1+ according to the CEFR) before they enter the course. All language skills will be practised with a particular focus on English for specific purposes and English for academic purposes.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to: - gain a basic understanding of professional English with a focus on international commercial law terminology, specifically working with model contracts, explaining agency, commercial law, and insolvency,
- develop comprehension of texts/recordings covering these topics,
- improve the ability to summarize and present the main ideas of a text/recording in English,
- learn how to work with model contracts,
- practice negotiation skills in English,
- enhance writing skills for formal emails in English.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to: - understand simple texts on international commercial law topics (model contracts, commercial agents and distributors, commercial law, insolvency),
- explain basic terms from these areas,
- compare and explain the advantages and disadvantages using appropriate linking words/phrases in English,
- present a complex topic,
- fill in a model ICC contract in English based based on the given information,
- negotiate contractual terms,
- propose possible solutions to a problem using appropriate language tools in English,
- explain the differences between a commercial agent and a distributor,
- describe the basic characteristics of corporations.
- describe the functioning of Czech commercial companies,
- describe issues related to insolvency.

Teaching methods
The teaching methods include three formats: - initial mandatory interactive session with the student's personal attendance at the faculty building to explain and the subject's content, teaching methods, and final assessment requirements,
- asynchronous e-learning (individual self-study) using provided materials in the Information System (IS): ROPOTs with texts, videos, and audio exercises as well as vocabulary practice.
- synchronous MS Teams interactive sessions in which the outcomes of the individual preparations will be presented and discussed, using group work, cooperative learning, and brainstorming. Emphasis will be placed on providing feedback and improving interactive and productive language skills. Communication between students will take place both during the sessions (in-person and online) and through the subject team in MS Teams or through discussion forums in the IS MU.
Assessment methods
The course is concluded with an examination. The requirements for passing the colloquium is the completion of a language portfolio ("portfolio tasks") and passing a language examination covering the topics of the two semesters: - portfolio tasks - 20%
- written exam (listening comprehension, reading comprehension, lexis and grammar, writing) - 50%
- oral exam - 30%
